There are four key documents to be familiar with:
- GC 001 Method of Measurement for Highway Works index
- GP 112 Introduction to the Method of Measurement for Highway Works
- GP 113 Instructions for preparation of and preambles to bill of quantities
- GP 114 Library of standard item descriptions for highway works
GC 001 contains the MMHW index. Note that the Standards for Highways website returns documents in alphabetical order, whereas the index provides the list of documents in the order that is relevant to the presentation into a bill of quantities.
GP 112 contains definitions and general MMHW principles.
GP 113 includes requirements on how bills of quantities are to be structured and general directions on what is deemed to be included within rates and prices. Specifically, the Bill of Quantities shall be divided into separate levels of identification, in the sequence set down in clause 1.27 of GP 113. A typical division includes:
- Preliminaries
- Roadworks
- Structures
- Structures where a choice of designs is offered
- Structures designed by the contractor
- Service areas
- Maintenance compounds
- Accommodation works
- Works for statutory or other bodies
- Daywork
- PC and provisional sum
GP 114 provides the library of standard item descriptions for highway works. It has been revised to adhere to the most current drafting guidelines and supports the MMHW suite of documents.
